Unicorn Dogs 🦄🐾

I was thinking about unicorn dogs today.

Partly because of a recent article I shared about the frustration many people feel with their dogs.

I think most of us get a dog with a picture in our minds of what life with that dog will look like.

We imagine a dog who walks nicely on the lead.

A dog who comes back when called.

A dog who can settle quietly in a café.

A dog who behaves beautifully whether we’re in a busy town centre, a quiet woodland walk or visiting friends.

And sometimes those dogs do exist.

Dog trainers often refer to them as unicorn dogs.

I’ve had one myself.

The sort of dog who arrives in your life and just seems to slot effortlessly into your world. They are naturally easy-going, relaxed and adaptable. They don’t seem to need much training and any little quirks they have are usually minor and easily managed.

But they are unicorns for a reason - they’re rare.

The reality is that most dogs have something they find difficult.

It might be visitors coming into the house.

It might be pulling on the lead.

It might be settling in new places.

It might be distractions outdoors.

It might be recall.

Or it might be all of those things rolled into one.

One of the most common things I hear from owners is:

“They’re brilliant at home, but…”

And it’s always the but that tells the real story.

The truth is that most dogs need support. Most dogs need training. Most dogs need guidance as they learn how to navigate our human world.

It’s a little bit like school.

There were always those people who seemed to breeze through everything. They didn’t appear to revise much, rarely struggled and somehow always seemed to find things easy.

Then there were those who had to work a little harder.

And those who found learning genuinely challenging and needed extra support.

Dogs are very similar.

Some dogs naturally cope well with the world around them.

Some need a little extra help.

And some need a lot more support, training and patience to develop the skills we would like them to have.

This is one reason I often encourage people not to view puppy classes as the finish line.

Puppy classes are wonderful.

I recommend them wholeheartedly.

But they are only the beginning.

Dogs continue developing long after puppyhood. They go through adolescence, hormonal changes, fear periods and all sorts of life experiences that influence their behaviour.

Training isn’t something we complete - it’s something we continue.

If your dream is to have a dog who can relax in a café, then it’s worth investing time and effort into building those skills.

If your priority is reliable recall, invest your energy there.

If your dog has specific challenges, consider a one-to-one trainer who can help you create a plan tailored to your dog.

Whether that’s classes, online learning, workshops or individual support, investing in your dog’s education is rarely money wasted.

Because most dogs aren’t unicorns.

They’re simply dogs.

Wonderful, complicated, imperfect dogs who are trying their best to make sense of the world around them.

And often the dogs who need the most support end up teaching us the most.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is progress.

And sometimes the greatest success isn’t having a unicorn dog at all.

It’s helping the dog you have become the very best version of themselves.

Need a little help?

If your dog isn’t quite the unicorn you imagined, you’re certainly not alone.

Whether you’re working on recall, loose lead walking, settling in public places, reactivity, confidence building or simply trying to make life with your dog a little easier, support is available.
